10 Fall looks to fall in love with (I certainly did)

As I tend to do when one season winds down into the next, last night I took a look back at my favorite celebrity ensembles of the previous few months and selected the 10 I found most swoon-worthy. A mix of classic all-black silhouettes with modern prints and edgy cuts, this (surprisingly) varied list has something for just about everyone.

In no particular order, my favorite looks of Fall '07:

Kate Bosworth in Etro
Rachel McAdams in Gucci
Michelle Williams in Sari Gueron
Keri Russell in ???
Eva Mendes in Zac Posen
Jessica Alba in Dolce & Gabbana
Jennifer Connelly in Giambattista Valli
Kate Walsh in Marie Marie
Sienna Miller in Vidler & Nixon
Hilary Swank in Louis Vuitton

love love LOVE Kate Walsh's look. Such a fabulous redhead. The hair, the shoes, the legs, the sunglasses. I also adore Rachel McAdams' look.

I also loved the kate Walsh look but then saw the pack of ciggies and changed my mind! Ewwww.

While I really like most of these choices, what's so spectacular about the Jessica Alba ensemble? She's really gorgeous and anything she puts on is going to look great. However, the white shirt/black skirt/black pumps looks to me like a more stylish version of what the majority of young DC women wear to work. Even if it is D&G.

Wow, I'm quite surprised by some of these choices. I'm with you on Kate Bosworth, though it seems very un-Johanna. It's pretty and it suits her. Rachel McAdams's dress grows on me. I think a cap sleeve would have made it a little lighter, but the shoes are just fantastic. You'll get no argument here on Eva Mendes' dress, which I want with a passion, and I can get down with JenCo and Kate Walsh on second looks (and bearing in mind your feelings about the boxy top and sleek bottom shape. But... Michelle Williams looks to be drowning in that outfit. Maybe its the photo angle, but her skinny legs look totally out of proportion to the rest of her, and the heaviness of the dress seems out of sync with her cute haircut and shoes. Keri Russell looks insane to me in this picture. Her hair looks out and the collar combined with the sleeves creates a very strange effect that is probably heightened by the hair. As for J Alba, I think, yes I'll say it, she looks frumpy here. The shirt looks too big and the skirt would have been better more tapered.
And then there's Hilary Swank - really? Is this a trick? The dress length in all out, the shoes are hideous in the extreme, the chunky heel, the creeping up to pootie top. I can't deny the attraction of the neckline, but the weird front seam in the skirt? The weird flaps around her hips? Not good.

Also, why is this post tagged Beyonce?

Sienna's coat is to die for! I love it.

whoops on the Beyonce tag - have no idea how she sneaked in there.

re: Hilary -- I did a post all about this look on 9/27 if you want the full explanation of why I love it so (minus, of course the pump creeping into pootie territory)

re: Keri -- hair and tan shoes aside, I think she looks flawless. Dunno, could just be a different taste thing between you and me. I'd probably shave my head if I could have that jacket.

re: Jessica -- I know this is classic and therefore, to some people, *dated*, but I think she spices it up with the sparkly belt and burgundy platform stilletos. I knew that look would make it into my top 10 as soon as I saw it a few weeks ago.

re: Michelle -- I agree her mini doesn't fit her as well as it could, but it's not so bad that I'd call it ill-fitting. Plus, I love the idea of it: long sleeves, sweet, scalloped detailing and short hem with a dramatic shoe.

best,
J

p.s. smoking = ewwwww (not necessarily for internal health reasons, but because being around it makes my clothes smell and doing it yellows your nails/skin)

Love them all but not crazy about Kate Bosworth's. Can't put my finger on it, but I just think it all looks so very busy for my taste. Would love if the dress had been black, then the scarf would've been a nice complement. But as is, I just don't get it.

Guess I'm not fashion forward enough ;-)

Except for her shoes, I love Hilary's suit. It's so hard to find unique, structured suits like hers for a reasonable price. Vintage is your best bet, and even then, they're still pretty pricey.

I'm with elle, Sienna's coat is mad gorgeous. that's the kind of design you'll never find at H&M or Zara. god damn it.

Keri Russell looks so great here, but I will say that a lot of my love for her lately comes from the fact that she had a baby only four months ago. She's been my motivation to lose the baby weight I still have from two YEARS ago.

I just blew all my fudge money for the month of December on that Marie Marie top. Had to get it, tho. Love it soooo much.

my wallet says "f*ck you" but my closet says "mwah!"

If you ever grow out your hair I hope it grows out better than Michelle's. She was cute when she cut it, but now... I hope she's transitioning to something... better.

michelle's shoes make me frown. :( that's me. frowning.
sienna's coat makes me smile. :) there i am smiling.

that is all.

i have to agree with the girls at go fug yourself re: kate bosworth.

the dress and scarf together are just too much for me. i think i'd like them separately.

a $398 top is covered by "fudge money?"

must be nice to have that kind of money and be a student!

that's what a summer associateship at a big L.A. firm will get you -- fudge money for the entire year!

do we know who McAdams shoes are by?

As far as shoes go, I think I like Jessica Alba's best, then Kate Bosworth's boots. Hilary's shoes are, like you said, a tad pilgrimy. Her LV suit is the gorgeousness though.

Jessica's pumps, Kate's boots, and Rachel's adorable platforms are my favorite of the shoes. (Though I am kind of neurotically anti-toe cleavage in pumps so that much I don't care for on Miss Alba's.)

I think I agree with Sara more than Jo on Michelle's dress - think it ends up a little pixie-little-girl-dressing-up-to-play-funeral clown. But the beading on the skirt is amazing.

I love Rachel's dress, color-blocking is my new favorite thing. I totally dont get Hilary's shoes though....

FYI, according to this week's issue of Life & Style, Keri's jacket is by Black Halo.
