For those who decide *not* to do the bathroom squats

If you tried 'em yesterday and immediately decided the bathroom squats weren't worth the trouble, don't fret, because in the same spirit of backside improvement, a reader was kind enough to send my way - and thus, your way - a coupon-code good for the entire month of October for 25% off any and all items on Spanx's website.

And, if you're big into the whole charity scene (whistling and rocking back on stilettos), you can feel both cinched and self-satisfied with your new Power Panties purchase, because every time a customer enters the code "Washington," Spanx has agreed to donate $5 toward the Junior League's literacy campaign.

Now if you're on the fence because you own something like this* or God forbid this, just remember, ladies, no matter how happy you may be in your own skin...

This is still what your ass looks like without Spanx.
Do the right thing.
*love you, E!

25% off Spanx is definitely worth it, charity or not.

I'm imagining you walking around DC in that feminist t-shirt...yeeeah, that's pretty damn funny.

This is great. Thanks, Johanna!

That second t-shirt made me shudder.

I tried the bathroom squats, and for now, I'm hooked. You're right, I CAN feel a difference already, and that's only half delusion!

Anonymous said...

Perfect timing! I was just thinking this morning that I need a new pair of power panties!

Thank god for spanx. If I could hand them out on the street as a public service I would. Everyone could use a little spanx.

Has anyone tried both Spanx and the Spanx-manufactured "Assets" line from Target? I have the same style shaper that Johanna posted from Target, $20. From Spanx, even with a discount? $56. Are they really worth paying nearly three times more for?

Anonymous said...

Though the discount may be tempting, J, don't buy anything - I'm putting some power panties in the mail this weekend. Everything is still going great :)

And like anon 8:30 said, I can already a feel a difference from the bathroom squats (which, yes, is a little sad!).

Anonymous said...

My friend bought "Assets" and she says that their shaping abilities are not as good as the original spanx. The only spanx I can't really handle are the higher power panties which come with a bathroom hole in the bottom. The idea of that really grosses me out.

Spanx really should be required of anyone with two XX chromosomes over the age of 18. For reasons of frugality, I do wear the Target Assets line. In my experience the Assets give roughly the same amount of "girdle" control as the regular Spanx but they aren't as durable and don't last for as many washings.

HAHAHAAAAAA! i ADORE my Feminist Majority Foundation tshirt! and don't tell me you didn't love it when i showed up at your apartment in my miniskirt, "this is what a feminist looks like" tshirt with a pint of ben and jerry's to console your heartbroken little self.
xoxoxoxo, e
ps - surprised you didn't just post the pic of me IN the tshirt IN darfur working with rape survivors. i'm such a proud feminist. and you're my friend. ADMIT IT!

Hmm. Interesting to see how many people are fans. I kind of always thought of body shaping anything as the preserve of the post-child woman. I just feel like it'd defy the point of insisting, as I do, on only owning very sexy underwear if I then covered it up with this stuff, which you'll admit is hardly likely to impress my boyfriend. Obviously, I'm not the type to wear either of those t-shirts either...

Maxie said...

Okay-- since we're on topic... how do those of you who own Spanx deal with taking them on and off to go to the bathroom all day? I bought a pair a while back and i'm not miserable when i'm wearing them, it's just getting them back on that's annoying... I even tried the next size up and I had the same problem. Any suggestions?

Anonymous said...

I have never tried Spanx before. So many options. Please tell me what item to buy to flatten my stomach. I like my hips/butt/thighs so don't know whether to get the ones that look like bike shorts, or the camisole (which doesn't look long enough to cover the full stomach). Also, do the panties still give underwear lines (the brief looking ones)?

Anonymous said...

Wait, are those pics of you? If so, given how much you work out and so on, maybe I SHOULD get a pair... My boyfriend might not like the underneath look, but the view from the outside is much improved! One last question though, wouldn't this whole VPL thing be solved by just insisting on a g-string or well-made thong?

VintageDeb said...

Look, here's an admission. My boyfriend has told me that he actually thinks my Spanx/Assets are sexy, because he says my rear end looks so great in them and I dress so much better now that I wear them. He also likes to tease me when he sees me getting into them in the morning. Don't automatically assume that guys don't like them. My boyfriend says that guys do notice and don't like panty lines and they like the look of smooth and firm and not jiggling.

Teek-

I haven't tried Target's brand, but that's primarily because I just really like Spanx's packaging. For serious, I'm that easy.

Spanx intern-

Oh, don't you worry, I'm holding out for your charity!

Etcetera-

Yes, I admit it. I loved your console-me uniform, and yes, I love your inclination to help others. It's sort of like my affinity for "Bridezillas," though...I like to watch it from afar but have nothing to do with it in real life. Not you, of course, but your do-gooder behavior. I'm afraid I'd sleep too well at night, you know?

Maxie-

I just deal. There's no trick to it. Pull 'em down and pull 'em back up. Sorry!

First time-

I'm addicted to the Power Panties, and no, definitely no VPL even with a pair of lacy boyshorts underneath!

Anonymous 10:17-

No, no, that's not me, that's some woman who is much braver than I who put her before/after photos on some website for all to benefit from. If you're really worried about your boyfriend's reaction, do what I do and make a quick scoot to the ladies' room to take them off before making sexy time.

best,
J

I bought the Assets tights, but haven't tried them yet due to the unnaturally warm DC fall. I also just bought a pair of the Spanx tights, thanks to the 25% off. I'll report back after I try them both.

I wake up before my boyfriend, so he doesn't see me putting on my granny panties in the morning, and usually take them off as soon as I get home. So far, I have been able to hide them from him.

VintageDeb said...

N, there's no need to hide. Plus, you can't hide it, because he can probably tell you're wearing Spanx just by putting his arm around your waist. It's not deception, and if, as it appears, so many stylish young women with good figures are wearing these things (which do eliminate panty lines and do help everyone's figure) it's not as if you're doing something that only an older or less sexy woman would do. Shapewear now (thank God!0 is fashionable.

Anonymous said...

Maybe its my love of being able to get it on whenever, whereever without having to run to the bathroom to peel off my support panties, but I'm still not sold... Tiny underwear to prevent the VPL and a workout/diet combination to prevent the jiggle. I think I'll stick with that for the moment.

quick question, do you order your regular size according to the charts, or would you go down a size for extra slimming, or does that just cause bulges? I want to order, but I always wimp out because I'm not sure of size! please help!

N said...

Women, wear your shapewear with pride! How's that for fourth wave feminism?

I always order the smallest size in everything because I am petite, but I am guessing that if one sizes down, it would create a sausage-effect.

VintageDeb said...

I've tried sizing down for extra control and it doesn't work. There are bulges and a comfort problem. Get your real size. If you want more control than what regular Spanx offer, get a more controlling garment in the proper size, like the hideously expensive Spanx Hide 'n Sleek or the cheaper, more traditional garments you can still get. Those really aren't that bad, comfort-wise, and they do offer excellent control.

And yes, wear shapewear with pride. And don't be afraid of boyfriends. Don't assume that they don't want you to wear these things.

Sadly, I'm both grossed out and very pleased at hearing the higher power panties have a "hole". (Oh dear, this sounds like camping or Canal street.) The Asset ones I have come up to my bra band, and there's always a bit after a few drinks where I have to pretty much take off my dress in the lady's room to wrangle them back up where they belong. DvF does not deserve such indignities.

I'm right between sizes and I wear the smaller size without disadvantages. But I wouldn't recommend true sizing down.

Anonymous said...

don't order a size smaller, you won't need to. these things are made just right, for real. ordering down a size will only make you uncomfortable and defeat the purpose.

Anonymous said...

FYI - spanx has great reversible tights, so they are like 2 in 1 (black/brown, black/ blue, etc.). So if you aren't into the body shapers, their tights are pretty cool.

Anonymous said...

Wait, people wear panties under their power panties? Am I wearing them wrong??

Johanna said...

Anonymous 12:23-

Yes, I always wear undies under my Power Panties. Don't know about others, but I don't like having my bits up against something that won't be washed for another few wears. Personal preference.

best,
J

Anonymous said...

Oh, I wash them every wear. Wouldn't dream of wearing them more than once if they're getting personal with my lady parts.

Anonymous said...

Has anyone tried the "Slim Cognito Seamless Control Panty"? I would like to confirm if it really doesn't give you VPL before I buy.

Anonymous said...

It's a tad disconcerting to have your lovely face at eye-level with that lumpy bum. Just sayin'.

Anonymous said...

GOD I love that haircut on you! Best thing you've ever done to your locks, for sure.

And yes, Spanx. Always.

Anonymous said...

dont want vpl -

I don't like the Slim Cognito seamless control panty because it has this butt-separator thing that made me very self-conscious. I don't think it's a dignified look, myself.

Anonymous said...

Love the new pic!

Anonymous said...

Do they flatten your bum, as well as your tummy? I could use help in one area, but not the other. I'll let you guess which.

Anonymous said...

The Power Panties I always wear smoothe and control your "bum" and your tummy. They don't exactly flatten you, but your butt, as in the picture, doesn't really look like two separate entities. This is the look I want.

I swear by my spanx Power Panties. They are probably my most essential clothing items. They make skirts and dresses sit SO great. And to the person who was hiding them from her bf, I did the same thing, until he caught me in them one day and he actually doesn't mind them at all. So no need to hide. Love your spanx!

Anonymous said...

Do not hide Spanx from boyfriends! Mine doesn't mind them either. We had a little Bridget Jones moment early in our relationship and he admitted to me that he likes them. Why shouldn't he? I look so much better in my clothes when I wear them. My boyfriend even likes to flirt with me by teasing me about them. It's not a big deal. It's part of who you are. Men don't care about something like that. They just like it when you look good.

I saw you on the street today - great shoes!!!!

No real opinion on Spanx. I have a pair, tried them on once, felt odd, and then never touched them again...

Johanna said...

Anonymous 7:28-

You should've come up and said "hello!" It always makes my day when readers do that!

And thanks on the shoe compliment :-)

best,
J

Just picked up four items on Spanx's site! Thanks for the coupon code!

Anonymous said...

As a guy, I'm looking at these two pictures and PRAYING women are ordering these Spanxy thingies. Prrraaayyying.

Anonymous said...

See, this is exactly what I mean. Guys would rather see the bottom picture than the top, so why would they mind us wearing Spanx. Almost nobody has a rear end that naturally looks like that, just as few women have legs that naturally look as good as a woman's legs do in a good pair of heels. Guys accept that for women to look really good, there has to be a certain degree of artificiality (how often do you leave the house without makeup?). They don't mind Spanx, really.

Anonymous said...

Do you think women who are thin and tall need these? My a** looks good in clothes w/out spanx. I tried it with spanx and it didn't change the look too much (it did make it look a little smaller and flatter) but it did feel A LOT firmer.

Do you were these with jeans too?

Do you think it is good for your health to wear these? I mean it should help with circulation and avoiding cellulite right? I wouldn't mind wearing it for preventive purposes. I used to work with an older woman in her 60s who swore that wearing compression hose for many years helped her maintain her nice figure.

Anonymous said...

candid cool - i hope to bump in to you one day while i'm rockin' that "this is what a feminist looks like" tshirt. the shirt's awesomeness is undeniable.

Anonymous said...

Anon- I am pretty slim though not precisely skinny. 5'4", 127 lbs. I wear Spanx with all dresses and skirts, even the most casual ones. The main reason I wear them is that they make me smooth and firm and everything fits so much better. I don't wear them with jeans because I don't wear jeans much and I never "dress up" in jeans. If I did, I think I would wear Spanx with jeans. I think they're perfectly comfortable, but not all women agree. My sister will only wear them for special occasions and finds them impossible to wear for a whole day. Get a few pair and see how you like them.

fyi ladies, loehmanns, filene's basement, and steinmart in friendship heights all have spanx in the footless tights style for $10-12ish in black and nude. footless tights may be out, but deals arent and you can always wear them with boots or under pants!
