Ruffled halter blouse from Pop: $49

Ruffled taffeta D&G skirt from Neiman Marcus' 'Last Call' sale: $144.20

Burgundy opaque tights by DKNY: $12

Exposed platform pumps by Marni: um, okay, so moving on...

Cadbury Creme Egg pre-party snack: $.89

Monte's permission to go out: belly rub and $1.50 braided bully stick

Ze Evening at The Source & Clyde's

See, a lady needs not a punch of color to make her outfit stand out -- it's all about creating drama with texture, cut, detailing and a couple of white-hot girlfriends.
(HRL in Alexander Wang; C in DvF)

And what better detailing than a bum bookended between a bow-belt and a row of ruffles? I mean, honestly, a bow and ruffles? For me, heaven.

Don't let my smile fool you -- I'm actually protecting HRL and C from the enblazered asshat who picked up HRL's camera, deliberately licked his lips and instructed us to "get it on all sexy-like".

Um yeah, dude, for you, anything, just as long as you spare us the gratuitous name-dropping, the visible shock at meeting three women smarter than you who don't look like Spam hash and your suffocating downpour of Chaps cologne.

*at The Source and Clyde's, the price went up to $7 and $6, respectively.

you look fierce!!!!

and you are so right about not having to wear color to standout....I wore a black dress to a gala this weekend and it was a success.

Anonymous said...

love your outfits - wish we could see HRL/C's entire ensembles though. more! more!

I know EXACTLY the kind of guy you're talking about too. A shiver just went up my spine when I read that last paragraph.

Anonymous said...

"Collide" is the operative word here. I'm sorry, J., but this is not you at your best.

Clyde's?

CLYDE'S?!

If only your dining/nightlife choices were worthy of your style.

Posting about Clyde's after posting about K Street? And you expect us to TRUST you?

ah well, we can agree to disagree...I loved this outfit on me.

L-O-V-E-D it.

Okay, I don't get the high-necked dresses. Women who have long, thin necks should be accenting them, not covering them up, I'm thinking about Givency here telling Audrey that she needed to bag the high collars and wear a scarf if she needed something around her neck. I just don't find it flattering.

Maybe it's just the pictures though, and it looks better in person?

We went to Clyde's for a dear friend's birthday party. You make the best of wherever you are, that's my view...unless there are skanky go-go dancers gettin' up in your junk, then you have the right to write a bitter review of the atmosphere ;-)

Anonymous said...

I love you went from someplace as posh as The Source (I hope anon 12:36 wasn't putting down Wolfgang Puck's new restaurant as well...) to a place as random as Clyde's. Looks like you had a good time, and I am loving that skirt on you. So playful and fun!

Anonymous said...

wow, this looks sunning. And the hemline length is just right. (I am the girl who wanted you to take up your mustard dress a couple of inches)
bravo!

Anonymous said...

the high neck totally works on you. if you've got a pretty face, which you do, the tall neck works like an arrow pointing up to it. dramatic and elegant. love it.

your friends are gorgeous!!

Anonymous said...

did you guys even eat at the source? you look so friggin' skinny all of you.

Anonymous said...

love the necklines you choose.

Anonymous said...

The last photo is adorable! I like your whole outfit but I would've worn it without tights. Come on, you can bear the cold!

How was the source anyway? trying to get a reservation for this weekend...

Anonymous said...

I've said it once and I'll say it again, you and your legs have no business wearing a skirt that length. You have a fantastic upper body - focus on that, but please don't make us look at your tree trunks any longer. Please!

Anonymous said...

your cheekbones and shoulders are to die for but I agree with anon 1:09, your legs are not to be showcased...

Anonymous said...

oh yeah, and too many ruffles this time

Anonymous said...

it's hard to believe that first photo and the second to last one are of the same girl. you look 15 pounds heavier in the second one. I'd crop out just your face, which looks super cute, but trash the rest.

which Wang is HRL wearing? I can barely see it!

Marissa said...

I disagree with those who don't like the tights or hem length. The burgundy tights make this look modern and fun, as does the length. Um, this was a party outfit people, not an effing funeral ensemble. Kudos, Johanna, for bringing it on in DC.

Anonymous said...

Anybody who knows about food knows that The Source is not long for that space, that Wolfgang Puck is over-rated, and that the food there has been widely panned for being inconsistent and overpriced.

And those tights...

Really?

Anonymous said...

do you know what a rut is, because I think you're stuck in one, style wise. Maybe you should (snicker) ask Project Beltway for some advice...

Anonymous said...

I don't know if anonymous 1:44 has ever been to the Source, but I've been three times and each time was even better than the last. Sure it's pricey, but the quality of food and service was impeccable.

and those tights...love 'em!

Johanna said...

for all those who hate my burgundy tights, you'll be pleased to know my bracelet snagged them twice at the end of the night and they're now in the garbage bin.

the next time I wear this -and yes, there will be a next time- I'll either go for a bare leg or something in a mustard hue. Believe me, I tried opaque black, and it's just too, too.

And I don't do the sheer black thing. Just not me.

oh, and the legs, they'll only get tree-trunkier as late April draws nigh...start thinking of more creative and hurtful insults now, 'cause you'll need them!

best,
J

Anonymous said...

Sietsema liked The Source, and his endorsement is good enough for me to try it at least once.

Anonymous said...

You look beautiful. And the beauty of style is that we all have our own. And yours is fab!

Seriously, can't understand why people feel the need to criticize you. It's your blog, your platform and really - your legs don't resemble tree trunks in the least.

Can't win 'em all I guess.

Anonymous said...

If the whole purpose of this blog is that Johanna can point out the flaws of women in DC, then why isn't it OK when the women in DC point out that those with bags under their eyes and fugly elbows (last picture) don't have a lot of room to judge?

Anonymous said...

Let's face facts: Johanna is stunning. I imagine all haters are 10+ lbs overweight and consider Ann Taylor to be high fashion. Jealousy's a biatch.

Anonymous said...

maybe she has bags under her eyes because in addition to a full-time job she updates this blog 2-3 times a day, trains for marathons has an active social life AND a JRT.

her elbows? are you joking? what, are they too double-jointed? too moisturized? too thin? JESUS.

Anonymous said...

I think J's made it clear she IS fair game for criticism on this site, but what's with all the personal attacks? keep it to the clothes, people, not her face and elbows (WTF?)

Anonymous said...

the whole purpose of this blog is NOT "to point out the flaws of women in DC" -- how long have you been reading this site, anon 2:20? I would wager a tenth of her posts are actual slams on women in your city, and of those she always provides alternatives. don't equate her with a hater, because she's a hell of a lot more than that.

Han, I adore the skirt and would love to see a closeup of its detailing (hard to make out in the third photo).

Anonymous said...

Maybe next time around, try a pair of small knit, eggplant or black fishnets. Not slutty, big knit fishnets - subtle ones. They are stylish (in a French kind of way) and they make one's legs look super slender.

Anonymous said...

Johanna has, indeed, commented on the bodies of women in DC, such as their "dry and cracked" heels, and blemishes on skin without makeup. Bodies and body parts are fair game. If you dish it, you have to be prepared to take it; I think J understands that, perhaps her readers/commenters don't.

Anonymous said...

I know the sarcastic Project Beltway mention was raised by one of Jo's bitchy friends, but from where I'm sitting, Rachel's style is a hell of a lot more sophisticated and attractive to look at than this mess. I don't care if it is from Neiman's, you look a Wet Seal mess here.

Anonymous said...

you do realize you and Katie Holmes have very similar figures, right? thin and sculpted up top with thick, runner legs down below. I'd try biking or yoga to slim yourself below the belt. it really works!

Anonymous said...

I was shocked to see how many of these 30+ comments were so negative! I think you look absolutely fantastic here and so do your friends. I hope all this petty catty bitchery won't keep you from posting pictures of yourself every now and again. This isn't an outfit I could get away with but you look gorgeous, elbows and all :)

Anonymous said...

I think you guys look great! I wish I had the balls/energy to dress up every weekend. Then again, DvF isn't "venue-appropriate" for the Black Cat or its like-minded establishments.

I do, however, take issue with your beverage choice. Domestic, light beer? Out of a bottle? Barf! It kills me that places have the balls to charge $7 for a lone bottle of that peewater.

Anonymous said...

the bags under the eyes comment is such a low blow. the girl sacrifices sleep for her blog, that's obvious. give her a break.

your skin looks so healthy and glowing! I'm hoping that mine will look this good after a few months on your twice a day full body moisturization regime!

Anonymous said...

You three have me craving bangs like you wouldn't believe! They're all so different and all so stylish. Now if I could only snag any of your cheekbones...

p.s. I'm still waiting for an explanation on the elbow comment. I really don't get it, was it a joke?

Anonymous said...

Is the hemlined raised in the back, or are the ruffles just crushed funny in that back shot? Or is there just no rosette in the middle back? If it's intentional, I don't care for that - I think it makes people look lopsided and big assed, and not in a Kardishanian way. In a handkerchief hemline way.

Elbows? People are crazy. I don't think the way to encourage a more flexible aesthetic to women's bodies is by slamming people who happen to be slim and athletic.

Now, the miller high life, I have no qualms about slamming. In poor taste, and $7 for a bottle. Heavens!

Anonymous said...

Tree trunks, bags under the eyes and the ridiculous reach for an insult by citing elbow issues? Jesus. You bitchy whores should be so proud of yourselves, because you have learned the key to true happiness! Reading blogs all day and knocking others down to make yourself better! Long term it works such wonders for your self-esteem and makes you somehow prettier, skinnier and more fashionable, I'm sure.

Anonymous said...

Oh, please, teek. Like Johanna herself has EVER encouraged a "more flexible aesthetic to women's bodies." Again, why do you readers feel that it is OK for Johanna to slam DC women...and some of the most beautiful women on the planet (Liv Tyler, Katherine Heigl, America Ferrera, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Beyonce, etc.)...and then when she is the object of less-than-flattering comments, you cry foul?

The tights are a miss, but that doesn't mean Johanna isn't lovely. There are some big ol' bags under those eyes, which doesn't mean she doesn't have a great smile. Just accept that there IS room to criticize Johanna, because she herself provided the platform to do so. She does it almost every post, she's called out women for everything from dry cuticles (WTF? are we really going down to that level?) to less-than-shiny hair. And that's FINE, but that means her thick calves and penchant for clown-necklines is FAIR FLIPPING GAME.

Johanna said...

I refuse to let your disapproval for my favorite drink bring me down. It's one thing to not like a trashy outfit because it makes the girl look trashy, but to launch that assault on a woman for the brand of alcohol she prefers? I guess I don't get that.

And I'm only drinking it in the longneck in my apartment - Monte likes to lick the condensation off the bottle, and his Mama does whatever His Lordship wants.

Miller Light/High Life/High Life Light/Genuine Draft forever!

kiss,
J

p.s. thank you to those who defended my poor under-eyes, but I'm in trouble if I look tired here, because for the first time in a good while, I actually got a good night's sleep the night before we went out. sh*t.

Johanna said...

p.p.s. those posts where I raise the topic of dry skin, bare midriffs at church, etc., are lead-ins to ideas for how to keep better moisturized, look slimmer and more appropriate in certain venues, and so on. When I write that Liv Tyler and Beyonce look big, I go onto say what they could've worn to most flatter their larger frames. I'll admit I'm no tolerant Tammy when it comes to certain faux pas (pl?), but I don't criticize for criticism's sake. There's always a larger point driving the post. That being said, I'm completely fine with y'all telling me what I already know. And no, that does NOT extend to calling Miller Light "peewater" (shaking head).

Anonymous said...

anonymous 4:09 sounds like a reeeal beauty...

"clown necklines"? J has taken a serious runway trend and translated it for evenings in DC. Look at Lanvin, Dior, Ralph Lauren, Fendi, Dries van Noten or any of the other fashion forward lines over the past year and you'll see that outrageous ruffly necklines are seriously in vogue. If you had a face half as cute as J's you'd show it off too.

Anonymous said...

how are the tights "a miss"? I love the color!

Anonymous said...

I'm not saying J's ever promoted a "flexible aesthetic to women's bodies". It's way harsher than my personal interpretation of "dress to flatter your figure", but this isn't my space.

I'm saying many of her critics take her down for her rather rigid ideas of beauty, and then turn around and slam her to, perhaps, "try to teach her a lesson"? It seems so backwards. At least J's consistent.

Drinks are accessories, in my book. I'd be saying the same thing if you were carrying a pink plastic LV bag, too. But then, I learned to drink from Englishmen so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Anonymous said...

If the most anyone can criticize about you is that your tights are too red, your calves are too muscular, your drink is too downmarket and your elbows are too _____ (?), you're doing fine, dear.

are you doing the OKC run again in April or a different one?

Anonymous said...

j, you have the most beautiful elbows i've ever seen. they wrinkle in just the right spots. i dreamed about them last night.

commenters - so cold this weekend you all missed your usual recess period? you seem awfully eager to get some anxious energy out. try some wall-sits or sculling crunches.

Anonymous said...

J you look great, but HRL needs to learn the correct way to apply an eyeliner.

Anonymous said...

I see no problem with muscular calves. I don't think they look tree-trunky; they look strong, and that is, by my definition, sexy!

Just wanted to put my 0.02 out there. Love the blog, read it occasionally, always glad that you haven't yet run into me on the streets.

On this blog Johanna calls out women for fashion faux paus and makes suggestions. She doesn't name names. That would be nasty. When she does call out celebs for their fashion she may be sarcastic, even biting, but she's not insulting. There is a way to critique without being insulting. Perhaps some people here need to learn how to do that.

If you want to call out Johanna's fashion without personal insults that's cool. She's putting her fashion sense out there. Not her body parts. In fact she deserves more fashion scrutiny because of the nature of this site. That doesn't mean people should be ass-hats.

Finally, Johanna takes authorship of her critiques. If you're going to slam Johanna doing so as an anonymous person just makes you a coward.

Anonymous said...

I'd much rather have a woman with legs like yours than some scrawny girl who couldn't last two miles.

And I agree with everything Dave wrote. There's a major difference between critique and needless slamming. You toe the line like a feline --another one of your talents.

Johanna said...

Teek-

the ruffle-row goes all the way around. it must just be the angle that makes the back middle section look different.

Dave-

Thank you. Exactly.

And to the rest-

If you'll notice, I haven't written a post in the vein of those few Liv Tyler/Katherine Heigl posts in more than six months. I tried it out and realized it's not really my thing. Plus, the boys over at The Superficial and IDLYITW do it sooooo much better.

And for the record, I have never slammed America Ferrera. I've written one post about her (http://aseriousjobisnoexcuse.blogspot.com/2007/02/oh-neckline.html) and it was decidedly nice, not at all intolerant or snarky.

Hey, I'm new to DC here.

Any suggestions for good places to bargain or sale shop for clothing? Or do you do most of your shopping online?

Also, I assume you work around Downtown or Dupont by your blog headline. Can you suggest some good places to get a quick lunch there on a workday?

Thanks!

Johanna said...

Anonymous 6:42-

Welcome to our city!

I'll probably get slammed here for not showing you the "true" bargain stores, but for what *I* consider a bargain, I sometimes go to Pop! on 14th St. but most often to Zara. There's one in Georgetown and one in Penn Quarter. They have a great selection at a fair quality. Annie Creamcheese, a vintage store in Georgetown, is a cool place for purses and cocktail jewelery and occasionally, a unique and in-perfect-condition 1950s party dress. I also like to peruse the sale racks I link you to at right. Because I am so busy not getting sleep and such, I do tend to order most of my clothes online. Thankfully, the vast majority of these stores offer free shipping (both ways), so there's really no sunk cost to hold you back.

For lunch, I'm addicted to Cosi salads but lately have been bandying between ABP for their soup and Nooshi for sushi takeout.

I'm sure others will you steer you to other great options, so check back in a little while...

best,
J

Guaranteed anyone calling your legs "tree trunks" is about four sizes bigger than you, jo, and consumes refined carbs on a regular basis. jo has an amazing figure, better than jen con's, and people without the willpower to achieve a similarly fat-free look have trouble dealing with it.

Velvet said...

This argument that Johanna bashes celebrities so some of you think you get to bash her is without merit. A celebrity is a public figure; Johanna is a private citizen. Granted she responded to the issue, stating that she isn't going down the road of celebrity critiques anymore, but I still wanted to make the clarification. There is a difference between critiques of celebrities and your cruel, malicious slams on both her style and her appearance. The hateful commenters here border on obsessive, coming back with the same slams over and over.

If you don't believe me, you can read this.

And for the record, Beyonce often looks hellacious and deserves every bit of criticism she can get from Johanna or otherwise. No one misses those SNL clips making fun of her more than me.

Anonymous said...

The fact that you even call celebs like Beyonce, America and Jennifer Hudson "fuller figured" is an insult. A size 8, 10 or 12 is NOT full-figured! It's average! Do the research, Ms. Ivy League.

Anonymous said...

I adore Johanna and her blog, but I disagree strongly with velvet...by publishing a blog for all the world to see, Johanna has made herself a public figure. She has revealed enough about herself that you can identify her first and last name, place of employment, where she comes from, where she went to undergrad and grad school, and general living area just from reading this blog, and perhaps a few Google clicks. Johanna has chosen to be a public figure.

And while I think she is altogether lovely and has a sophisticated sense of style, I also agree that she has made both her wardrobe choices AND her physical appearance "fair game," though I would urge those who wish to negatively criticize her to do it with a bit of tact and grace.

I would also urge Johanna "supporters" such as anon 7:42 that there is more than one physical ideal, and it is entirely possible that some women don't care to look like JenCon or similar! Give me Catherine Zeta-Jones, Monica Belluci, or ScarJo any. day. of. the. week.

(And no, I'm not fat, I'm a swimmer, thank you very much.)

OK, as Tim Gunn would urge us, "Carry on!" "Make it work!"

Anonymous said...

I like the overall look. The tights wouldn't have been my choice, but I admire your boldness and style.

A few comments have been made about HRL. She may have a bigger clothes budget, but you get a bigger bang from your buck, from what I can see.

Anonymous said...

Johanna, you have lovely, trim, athletic legs. Don't listen to the critics.

Velvet said...

Laura - you don't get to become a public figure by proxy. You can't just create a website, talk about some stuff, and wham, you are a public figure. Check the definition: politician or celebrity. Last time I checked, other than a limited, singular vote, I don't have the ability to change who gets to be a politician or a celebrity. But I DO have a choice in who I select to go-to for my fashion blog. She's not making money from this, you don't pay for it, she doesn't owe us anything in the form of "service."

Even if you can't see somehow that you are wrong about the above, perhaps you could at least see how coming to someone's personal website to attack their appearance is unnecessary, hurtful and wrong. But these comments speak more to the person/people saying them than they do about whom they are being said.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous 6:42 here...J, thanks for your response. I'll be sure to check out the stores you mentioned sometime soon.

Thanks again.

Johanna said...

not a fashion queen-

Perhaps I haven't given HRL a fair shake here, because believe me, you put her closet and my closet in the octagon, and mine will fall on its face. Don't get me wrong, I do pretty well with the budget I've given myself, but you really should've seen what was going on atop and below that dress of hers on this evening, namely the most incredible coat and pair of stiletto boots God did ever put on this earth.

I'm *still* thinking about them...

Anonymous said...

a drink as an accessory is a ridiculous concept, I'm sorry. The outfit looks great on you, Jo, and I actually like the red tights on you. The picture from behind is clearly a less flattering angle than the first one, but anyone who reads your blog knows that. These commenters need to get a hobby, because I know from experience that ripping down a pretty girl gets boring real quick.

Anonymous said...

My thoughts on blog comments, Miller Lite and Jo's legs are to follow - take them or leave them. I have yet to understand what compels a person to attack someone they know nothing of based on an uninformed interpretation. Yes Jo puts herself and her opinions on a wide variety of matters out there for all to read and comment on... but I am of the mind that if you dont like what you see, what you read.. why do you continue to do so? Change the fucking channel! What is it in your life that you hate so much that attacking someone you dont know for their view point some random matter makes you feel better about yourself? Perhaps something you should address with a professional eh? Oh my sweet Miller Lite... I have sat in the beautiful and self important street side cafes and perfectly dirty bars in locals around the world from Belgium, Italy, Germany, France, to Kentucky, Texas, Chicago, San Fran, The District, and blah blah blah... One drink comes back as being honest every time.. That drink is Miller Lite. Say what you will.. drink what you think you are supposed to in whatever place or company you believe you should. But you should be drinking, doing, saying what YOU like. Jo does that and so should you. And last but far from least is the subject of her legs.. Are you willing to post pics of yours for the world to judge? No. Her's, and I can personally attest to the fact, are perfection. Have you personally seen them clad in tights disappearing into a perfectly fitted skirt? Have you run your fingers slowly over them? Had them wrapped around you? No you haven't. So when you make disparaging comments - you know not where of you speak.

Anonymous said...

Whoah, I thought Jo liked girls, but anon 12:43 sounds like a dude. A dude who's "been" with Jo. I'm confused now...do you like both?

Anonymous said...

Jo does like girls. She also likes dogs. And books.

You people are so silly. Entertaining as all fuck, but downright silly.

J, I think you know that third picture isn't flattering, so kudos to you for posting it anyway. The other three are, as the first of these many comments asserted, FIERCE.

And how dare you let another man's fingers run slowly over those marathon thighs -- I thought you were waiting until I turned straight? I thought we had an agreement??

the shoulders are looking just about there. keep doing whatever it is you're doing (or not doing).

Anonymous said...

just because she likes a certain type of neckline and certain details doesn't mean in the least that her clothes are all starting to look the same. we like what we like, J has a certain aesthetic that she feels comfortable and sexy in. you have one, I have one, we ALL have one. to suggest Johanna should alter her style to please us, her readers, is ludicrous.

love the skirt!

Johanna said...

oh, and to anonymous 12:43, well...I appreciate the fondness of your reminiscence. I'm pretty sure those last few sentences will have have both my Mother and Father dialing my number at some point in the day to discuss what exactly you meant by "personally attest."

so, for that, I thank you ;-)

p.s. I'll drink Miller beer with you *any* time!

Anonymous said...

I made the first comment about the Miller Light. I can't believe everyone took it so seriously. I couldn't care less about someone's drink. I just thought it was funny that someone who's known for having great taste drinks bad beer. It was meant to be tongue-in-cheek and not a personal attack, although I guess that doesn't always translate well over the Web.

Some of you commenters need a lot of Valium...or maybe something even stronger. The sycophants who post here are almost as annoying as the haters are.

Anonymous said...

Miller Lite is disgusting. Where are you from anyway? Ohhhhh that's right, *Oklahoma*. It all makes sense now.

Anon 1243 grossed me out. Like, really bad.

Anonymous said...

Velvet,

Seriously...it is one things to say that "by the book," Johanna is not a "public figure." (Um...did you know that Wikipedia is not actually a respectable source of information?) Whatev, that's fine.

But you cannot honestly be defending the position that Johanna has not made her clothes, her physique, her hair, her face, her makeup, her shoes, etc., completely fair game? This is indeed her blog...her blog about all these things of hers AS WELL as her critique of DC women, women in general, and celebrities. I mean, even operating under the fact that she herself is a DC woman, she has opened herself up to critique under the "mission statement" of her own blog!

If Johanna *doesn't* want people to comment on her clothes, hair, face, body, etc., then she either needs to turn off comments or stop judging others lest she be judged.

Velvet, why is it that Johanna doesn't have a problem passing judgment on others and having others pass judgment on her, yet you do?

Anonymous said...

you all keep calling Johanna "judgmental" as if she's some evil bitch, but I've been reading her writing for as long as she's been making it available, and I don't find her that much more judgmental than any of my friends or me. Beyonce aside, her critiques have all been, as Dave pointed out, ANONYMOUS. It's easy to be high and mighty behind a veil of anonymity, but I bet most of you are just as or more critical of other women than Johanna is. And in your cases, it's not to help make a point but just for sport.

Love HRL's hair here, btw.

Anonymous said...

Johanna could just as easily make a point of how important it is to lotion your legs without writing some snarky account of how she saw a woman with dry legs during her lunch break. Just saying.
