Wardrobe staple identified

The wardrobe staple I brought to your attention last Thursday has finally made its way onto the Internet.

It may not look like much here, especially with the model's America's Next Top Model-worthy facial expression and awkward posture, but believe me, this is not your typical, didn't-my-friend's-mom-just-wear-that? Ann Taylor blouse.

When tucked into a high-waisted anything - a pencil skirt, an A-line skirt, a pair of wide-legged trousers, these 'Phoebe' cuffed dress shorts by Sunner ($163 at shopbop.com) - this blouse, as Mary Kate Olsen so articulately put it in her NYT article, really "does its thing."

I won't belabor this Silk Square Button Top's versatility any further (I did enough of that in last week's post), but I would like to point out that as white as this blouse looks in the above photograph, it is actually very much a creamy, almost taupe-y shade of ivory. An antique ivory, if you will. This is a very important distinction to make, because the difference between wearing a white silk shirt and an ivory silk shirt is the difference between looking like a 70 year old Upper East Side socialite and a young Upper West Side fashion PR power broker.

Those shorts are super cute. If they came in black, they'd be even cuter, especially with your silk blouse.

Could you get away with that look at the office? The shorts, I mean?

Of course I could. With peeptoes, too!

And that's why we love her, "dc girl," because we already knew the answer before she said, "of course!"

I just don't get the dressy shorts look. I think it looks a bit silly. Is that awful?

I don't normally like high-waisted looks, but these shorts are great! I like that they're not quite short shorts but not quite bermudas. Now only if they weren't over $150...
